Export Credit Agency of Kazakhstan Approves Climate Strategy

The Export Credit Agency of Kazakhstan (ECA) has approved a Climate Strategy defining the Company’s long-term approaches to managing climate risks, reducing carbon impact, and supporting the sustainable development of export activities.

The adoption of the Climate Strategy marks an important milestone in integrating the climate agenda into ECA’s operations and aligns with global trends in the development of the financial sector, as well as with the requirements of sustainability and climate-related disclosure standards — IFRS S1 and IFRS S2.

The Climate Strategy is aimed at establishing a systematic approach to identifying and managing climate-related risks and opportunities in export credit activities, gradually reducing ECA’s own carbon footprint, building transparent and consistent mechanisms to support export projects with consideration of climate factors, and enhancing portfolio resilience amid the global energy transition and climate policy transformation.

The document sets unified benchmarks and principles guiding ECA’s activities, while preserving its development mandate to stimulate exports and support domestic producers.

For Kazakhstani exporters, the approval of the Climate Strategy means a stronger focus on supporting non-resource exports, facilitating production modernization and energy efficiency improvements, creating conditions for the development of transition and socially significant projects, and strengthening trust from international partners and financial institutions.

The Climate Strategy does not introduce additional restrictions for exporters and is aimed at a gradual adaptation to international requirements and best practices, taking into account national economic priorities.

ECA is among the first organizations in the financial sector of the Republic of Kazakhstan to approve an independent Climate Strategy. This reflects the Company’s commitment to the principles of sustainable development and responsible climate risk management.

In the context of shaping the national climate and ESG agenda, the presence of such a strategy contributes to the development of advanced practices in the financial sector and strengthens ECA’s role as an export development institution.

The Climate Strategy will serve as a foundation for further improvement of methodologies, internal processes, and export support instruments. Its implementation will be carried out in stages, taking into account the structure of the export portfolio, the specifics of Kazakhstan’s economy, and the interests of domestic exporters.

The Agency will continue integrating climate aspects into its activities, contributing to the sustainable development of exports and enhancing the competitiveness of Kazakhstani products in international markets.
